Classical Hatha Yoga

Now what is Yoga? When you utter the word yoga, everyone has a notion of what it could be or should be. One of the first things that people normally think of yoga is that it means standing on your head and normal means standing on your feet. Yoga is not about doing anything in particular, it is a way of being. It is a certain way in which a person can be. That is Yoga.

The word Hatha means, in most Indian languages, in common usage, being adamant. This is the quality that you will need. Your body will say, “enough, I have had it.” But, you are adamant. This is Hatha Yoga. Your mind says, “I give up, I can’t do this anymore.” But you are adamant, you simply do it. So, Hatha Yoga means perseverance.

The deeper and real meaning of the word Hatha – “Ha” means sun and “Ta” means moon. Hatha Yoga means the sun and moon yoga. We are talking about the sun and the moon within us. Hatha Yoga is one way of balancing the sun and the moon within us. This balance is very essential for a person who is thinking in terms of higher energies in life.
